15 mars – my mom is a nerd

My mom is a nerd. Like, my friends think I’m a bit eccentric for having a personal library of mostly picture books and following my favorite authors and illustrators on social media (my friends are obviously not elementary school teachers), but seriously, I’ve got nothing on my mom. She frequently says that authors are her superheros. She once won a signed Lois Lowry book for being the speaking event attendee who travelled the furthest to be there. She regularly maxes out the library loan limit checking out books for her classroom. This is the story I usually use to illustrate my mom’s particular fanaticism for all things children’s literature: “When I was in middle school, my mom took us to this museum in Massachusetts called the Museum of Picture Book Art — no, seriously.” *Cue laughter from my friends as they can already see this level of nerdiness goes way beyond what they were expecting* “Anyway, the museum is pretty cool. 8 mars – 20 steps to perfect crêpes

Crêpes are known as French pancakes, but they’re really so much more than that. They can be eaten with sweet jams, nutella, or syrups or with savory cheese, meats, veggies and even eggs. I recently perfected my own method to make perfect dinner or dessert-ready crêpes, and you can follow along with my instructions below! Google search “easy crêpe recipe“ Realize that all of these American food blogs and recipe sites have their measurments in cups and tablespoons and you live in a country that measures things in liters and grams. Google search “recette crêpes facile“ Open up the first 3 or 4 links to compare methods and ingredients. Eliminate any that include ingredients you don’t have, like Grand Marnier or rum. They’re clearly too complicated for a weeknight. Your randomly chosen recipes call for a differing number of eggs: some say 2, others 6…so split the difference and crack 3 into a large bowl. Whisk. overheard at school

The architects of our brand new school building are documenting their works with photos and videos during the school day. Two girls are watching a camera crew get video footage of another grade at recess through the window of their classroom.  Girl 1: I think they are filming a movie on the playground. Girl 2: Those kids get to be in a movie?! Girl 1: Yeah, I it probably starts like, ‘They were all having a great time at recess. It was a beautiful day. I crunched another tortilla chip as I watched the sun set from my parents’ rooftop patio. Before that, I lugged three floor pillows to the top floor to make myself a cozy reading spot in the dying sunlight. Before that, I sat down at my dining room table, texting my friend, noticing the birds and squirrels playing in our yard beyond the glass doors. Working in a district that has a 1-to-1 technology initiative (all students 2nd-12th grade are given devices by the county), I am constantly wondering about the best ways to get children to use this technology responsibly. One major concern — which is often used in arguments against 1-to-1 technology programs — is that putting these devices into kids’ hands turns them into easily distractible zombies who are addicted to video games and don’t collaborate or talk to their friends anymore, consumed by their screens. I think there are a lot of things wrong with that assumption to start with (that is a post for another day…), but I also think that it then falls to us to model responsible use and to set limits on when devices should and should not be used. Some teachers I’ve spoken to have a policy that the technology should be used to create, not only to consume. I think this is a wonderful place to start! When I see kids in the halls playing mindless online games on their iPads, I usually ask …
